Located in the northwestern part of Yamhill County, Yamhill is the smallest city in Yamhill County with its beginnings in the mid-1800s and its incorporation in 1891. It began as the beginning of the Trask Wagon trail to Tillamook which provided many business opportunities to serve the travelers heading west to the Coast. Agriculture is the primary industry in this community as the surrounding land is framed with the traditional Yamhill Valley nurseries and seed crops but also boasts fields of lavender and grapes. The city has a total area of 0.42 square miles, all of it land.
